Gardening in South America

During the past months my husband and I have been traveling around South America doing some tourism and looking the gardening experiences down there. In January 2012 we tried the eco-tourism in Reñaca, Viña del Mar in Chile by subscribing the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms - WWOOF

Our help was in a small fruit farm whose owner is Mrs. Carmen Gloria Rodriguez who not only has a beautiful display of healthy fruit trees on her place, she is a painter and has an amazing display of her art around the house.

One of our main tasks was weeding these beautiful, aromatic and invasive flowers known as Vira-Vira, Gnaphalium sp. They were spread every where giving such pleasure and nice aroma to the area. Nevertheless, they needed to be pulled out because they overwhelming the fruit trees.

We were very delighted getting to know the family of Mrs Rodriguez, her friends, her pets and specially her Huerto de Frutas, she shared dinner with us and we toasted with the exquisite Chilean wine.

After we were done, we headed out down to the Patagonia, far to the Chilean south.
